Azeezat & Roger
Château Gassies wedding, Bordeaux
Château Gassies sits 30 minutes from Bordeaux, among the vineyards of one of France’s best-known wine regions, with a long mirror fountain in front of the house. Azeezat and Roger brought two families and their traditions here for one day.
A light rain at the start changed nothing. They married under the stone arcade beside the gardens, among deep red flowers, and by the time the guests were out with their drinks the rain had stopped. We made portraits by the fountain at sunset, dinner was in the ballroom, and the night ended with traditional outfits and a full dance floor.

Morning
Azeezat got ready in a bright room under the roof, with her dress on the old wardrobe and her bridesmaids in shades of red. There was champagne, a lot of laughing and a few quiet minutes at the arched window before the dress went on. Her father came up to see her in her veil.

Across the house
Roger and his groomsmen dressed in a room full of old furniture: braces, bow ties, cufflinks and plenty of jokes. He waited for the last part in the library. Before the ceremony they saw each other for the first time by the window, holding hands.

The ceremony
They married under the stone arcade by the gardens, with deep red flowers at the arch and along the aisle. The light rain outside did not reach anyone. Roger read his vows through tears, Azeezat laughed through hers, and they walked out between the cypress trees under a shower of petals.

Cocktail hour
By the time the guests came out with their drinks the rain had stopped. Traditional dress and head wraps next to suits and summer dresses, cocktails at the bar, and friends posing on the stepping stones of the fountain.

Sunset
The clouds opened just in time. We walked the lawns in front of the château, the bridesmaids spread out the train, and we finished at the mirror fountain as the sun went down behind the cypresses.

Dinner in the ballroom
The ballroom looks like a page from a wedding magazine: stone walls, chandeliers, round tables with red flowers and gold candlesticks. Azeezat and Roger danced their way in, and the speeches brought out the tears again.

Into the night
After the first dance came the croquembouche with sparklers and a champagne tower. Later Azeezat and Roger changed into traditional outfits in pink and white, and the dance floor stayed full late into the night.

Photographing at Château Gassies

The estate.
Thirty minutes from Bordeaux, on the edge of the vineyards, with open countryside around it. The house, the gardens and the ballroom are close together, so the day moves easily from one to the next.
The mirror fountain.
A long reflecting pool in front of the château. At sunset the house, the cypresses and the couple all appear twice, and it is my favourite place here for portraits.
Ceremonies.
Outdoors, framed by the château and the gardens. Azeezat and Roger married under the stone arcade beside the garden, which a light shower did not disturb.
The ballroom.
Stone walls, tall windows and chandeliers, light-filled by day and warm by candlelight, with room for a long dinner and a full dance floor.
