Périgueux is the capital of the Dordogne, an old cathedral city on the river Isle, with the domes of Saint-Front rising above the lanes of its medieval quarter. Farmland and woods begin a few minutes from the centre, and Château de St-Paul sits among them, just outside the city.
Near Périgueux I photograph weddings at Château de St-Paul: pale stone buildings with steep tiled roofs around a wide gravel courtyard, beamed rooms with chandeliers for getting ready, and everything a few steps apart. Sarlat and the châteaux of the Périgord Noir are about an hour away, and I work there too.
The city
The cathedral, the riverside along the Isle and the lanes of the old quarter suit an engagement session or a walk together the morning after.
Château de St-Paul
Narrow lanes run between the buildings, and the courtyard gives a veil room to fly. There are no transfers: the ceremony, drinks and dinner are all a short walk apart.
Light
The pale stone walls and the gravel courtyard keep the light soft. Late afternoon is the best time for portraits.
Getting there
Bergerac is the nearest airport, about an hour south. Périgueux has a train station on the line from Bordeaux.
