Bergerac is a wine town on the Dordogne river, in the south-west of the Dordogne, with vineyards and stone châteaux spread across the countryside around it. Its small airport has direct flights from the UK, which makes it an easy base for guests.
I drive over from Bordeaux, about an hour and a half away. Around Bergerac I’ve photographed weddings at Château Lacanaud near Eymet, Château Naudou and Château La Colombière. Days here are usually outdoors from start to finish: ceremonies on the lawn, drinks under parasols, portraits in the courtyards.
The town
The old quarter by the river has half-timbered houses and small squares, good for an engagement session or a walk together the morning after.
The estates
Venues around Bergerac are spread out, with lawns, courtyards and outbuildings rather than one grand room. That means short walks between each part of the day and space for guests to spread out.
Light
Pale stone and open horizons keep the light steady and forgiving, especially from late afternoon into the evening.
